Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are small, parasitic insects that feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals, particularly humans.

These tiny pests have plagued humans for thousands of years, and their biology has allowed them to adapt to life in close quarters with their hosts.

Despite their small size, bed bugs are highly resilient and can survive in various environments. Understanding their biology is essential for effective control and eradication.

What Do Bed Bugs Look Like?

Size and Appearance: Adult bed bugs are flat, oval-shaped insects about the size of an apple seed, measuring 5 to 7 millimeters in length.

They are reddish-brown in color, though they appear more reddish after feeding.

Immature bed bugs, or nymphs, are smaller and translucent or whitish-yellow, making them harder to detect.

Wings:

Bed bugs lack wings, so they cannot fly. However, they are agile and can move quickly across floors, walls, and ceilings. Their wing pads are vestigial, meaning they evolved from ancestors that had wings but no longer use them.

Mouthparts:

Bed bugs possess specialized piercing-sucking mouthparts that allow them to feed on their host’s blood.

Their mouth parts are beak-like and comprise two tubes—one for injecting saliva and another for drawing blood.

Life Cycle and Reproduction

Bed bugs have a relatively simple life cycle with three main stages: egg, nymph, and adult. They then have five molting phases within the nymph stage, growing larger after each molt. This gradual metamorphosis is critical to their survival.

Egg Stage:

  • Egg Description: Female bed bugs lay small, white, oval-shaped eggs, about 1 millimeter in size, making them nearly invisible to the naked eye.
  • Egg Laying: A female can lay up to 200 to 500 eggs in her lifetime, depositing them in cracks, crevices, and other hidden areas near a host’s resting place.
  • Hatching: Eggs hatch in about 6 to 10 days, releasing nymphs that immediately seek their first blood meal.

Nymph Stage:

  • Growth: Nymphs go through five molts (shedding their exoskeleton) before reaching adulthood. They must consume a blood meal before each molt.
  • Development: The entire nymphal stage takes about 5 weeks under favorable conditions (i.e., when there is adequate warmth and access to blood meals).
  • Size: After each molt, nymphs become larger and change color, gradually darkening with each stage.

Adult Stage:

  • Maturation:After the fifth molt, bed bugs become fully grown adults. They are ready to mate and continue the reproductive cycle.
  • Lifespan:Under optimal conditions, adult bed bugs can live anywhere from 4 to 6 months. However, in cooler environments or without regular access to blood, they can survive for up to a year or more by going into a dormant state.

Feeding Behavior

Nocturnal Feeders:

Bed bugs are primarily nocturnal, preferring to feed on their hosts at night. However, if a bed bug is hungry and a host is nearby during the day, it may come out of hiding to feed.

Finding Hosts:

Bed bugs are attracted to the carbon dioxide, body heat, and chemical cues emitted by their hosts. Once they locate a host, they insert their mouthparts into the skin to feed.

Feeding Process:

  • Duration:  Feeding can take anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes, depending on the bed bug’s life stage.
  • Frequency:  Bed bugs typically feed every 3 to 7 days, although they can survive for extended periods without feeding if necessary.
  • Saliva:  Their saliva contains anticoagulants to prevent blood clotting and anesthetics to reduce the host’s awareness of being bitten.

Although bed bugs do not transmit diseases, their bites can cause itching, irritation, and allergic reactions in some individuals. Multiple bites are often arranged in a linear pattern or clusters, as bed bugs may take several bites before during a good feeding. Habitat and Behavior

Preferred Hiding Spots:

Bed bugs are expert hiders, typically residing in areas close to where humans sleep or rest. Some common locations include:

  • Mattress and box spring seams, and bed frames.
  • Behind headboards or picture frames.
  • In cracks and crevices of walls, furniture, and flooring.
  • Inside electrical outlets, baseboards, and other small openings.

Clustering Behavior:

Bed bugs are social creatures and often live in groups. They do not form nests like ants or bees but prefer to cluster in dark, secluded areas.

Survival Mechanisms:

Bed bugs are highly resilient and adaptable, capable of withstanding a variety of environmental conditions. They can survive in temperatures ranging from 46°F (8°C) to 113°F (45°C) and can live without feeding for extended periods. This ability makes them difficult to eradicate once they infest a space.

How Bed Bugs Spread

Hitchhiking:

Bed bugs are expert hitchhikers, often spreading by hiding themselves in clothing, luggage, furniture, or other personal items. This is why bed bug infestations are commonly associated with high-traffic areas such as hotel rooms, apartments, and public transportation.

 

A bed bug is unlikely to hitchhike on your body, in your hair, or on your clothes. They do not attach themselves to you like fleas or lice and do not transfer from one human to another. They typically climb into a bag or suitcase that will provide a good hiding spot.

 

Infestation Dynamics:

Infestations typically begin when a group of bed bugs are introduced to new areas. If a single adult male is introduced to your home, it cannot breed and will not grow into an infestation. When a single pregnant female is introduced, it is possible it can grow into an infestation, but in most cases, its a group of bed bugs that hitchhike into your home to start the infestation.

 

An infestation is established once reproduction can regularly occur. If you are finding bed bugs at different life stages (adults, nymphs, and eggs), then you have an established infestation.

 

Bed bugs reproduce at an astounding rate. One pregnant female will lay up to 7 eggs per week and up to 113 eggs in her lifetime. Those eggs will hatch and grow into adult bed bugs in 3-5 weeks and can then start reproducing. Once established and without limiting factors, the population will grow exponentially and double every 16 days.

Bed Bug Resistance to Insecticides

In recent years, bed bugs have developed resistance to many common insecticides, including pyrethroids, which were once the primary means of control. Their resistance is attributed to genetic mutations that enhance their ability to detoxify chemicals or reduce the penetration of toxins through their exoskeletons.

Bed bugs cannot develop resistance to heat. Like all living organisms, bed bugs have a specific range of temperatures within which their bodies can function. Their cellular structures and proteins are optimized for survival within a certain temperature range, typically between 70°F and 90°F (21°C to 32°C). When exposed to temperatures above 113°F (45°C) for an extended period, the proteins in their bodies begin to denature, and essential biological processes break down, leading to their death.
