Bed Bugs & Heat Treatments

Bed bugs are small (approximately 1/4 inch long) parasitic insects that feed on humans and other warm-blooded animals. Bed bugs do not jump or fly, but they are able to get around by hitch-hiking on clothing and bags, and move through extremely small opening such as cracks or holes in furniture or walls.  Bed bugs typically bite at night, but can also come out during the day if the right environment is present or if they are hungry enough.  Places that see a great deal of “turn-over”, such as hotels/motels, public transportation, and other highly populated public locations have the highest chance of a bed bug infestation.  Although bed bugs like cluttered locations, cleanliness is not a factor in the likelihood of a bed bug infestation. Anyone can bring home bed bugs!

Bed Bug Signs

Bed bugs can be found in any part of a room room or structure.  Common places that bed bugs like to hide are the bed, upholstered furniture, curtains, flooring (including under rugs, carpet, and hidden behind baseboards and wood flooring), behind wall decorations, inside electrical outlets, as well as inside dressers and bed side furniture.  Small reddish brown spots on linens are often the first sign of an infestations.  Tiny black droppings and cast skins are another indicator of bed bug presence.

You may also find out bed bugs are living in your home, or at your place of business, by finding their bites.  Bed bug bites are often mistaken for mosquito or similar insect bites. Bites can be identified by localized, red and itchy lesions that often appear in groups of 3. Bed bugs do not carry diseases but individuals with allergies to their bites may experience dangerous allergic reactions.
